History:
Born in the small agricultural town of Polička, Bohumil's future seemed determined to lie in his father's fields: a life of hard work and little reward. However, at primary school Bohumil showed a particular proficiency in reading and arithmetic; enough, at least, to make the rector of the school, a Jesuit priest, take notice of him. When he had completed his elementary education, the rector suggested to Bohumil's family that he be sent away to Prague to study at a gymnasium there that he might prepare for entrance into the Jesuit order. Since his parents did not have much money, an education sponsored by the Jesuits was the only way for Bohumil to move beyond his elementary studies. Bohumil's Father agreed to the rector's proposal and he spent four years at the gymnasium, distinguishing himself in literary studies and philosophy.
At the age of 18 he obtained his Maturita from the gymnasium and enrolled in the Catholic theology department at Charles University in order to begin the grueling 12 year process of becoming a Jesuit. Again, he zealously pursued his studies and demonstrated great acuity in biblical studies. Since he was a boy, the stories of the Bible had fascinated Bohumil, and now he sought to make a career of understanding them and explicating them to others. He was particularly interested in the history of the Bible in the Middle Ages, and loved to read the exegetical writings of the great Doctors of the Church, such as Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. Indeed, the Jesuits had great hopes that Bohumil would be a great and influential religious educator.
But then the war happened. Bohumil was pressed into service as a chaplain on the Serbian front. As men died all around him, he found it more and more difficult to console the few soldiers that came to him, asking how God could permit such devastation. Bohumil searched for an answer in himself and in the book he had studied so lovingly. He gave the soldiers the standard responses and told them to read the book of Job, but Bohumil was increasingly unconvinced. After a while he discharged his duties for the sake of form alone. His faith became hollow, and, eventually, non-existent.
When the war was over Bohumil, not knowing what else to do and fearing a life of poverty, returned to his studies at Charles University. He completed his doctorate in biblical studies and was accepted into the Society of Jesus and, eventually, as professor of biblical studies at the university. However, whereas once he was bright and happy with his brothers and colleagues, he now became reclusive. His studies, too, became more and more obscure. He fixated on the folklore underlying some of the biblical passages he had studied. He wanted to learn more about the marginal characters in the Bible and even began to study the apocryphal writings. Figures such as Sammael, Azazel, Behemoth, and Leviathan, became the focus of his research. It was while researching the latter that he discovered the manuscript collections at Miskatonic University; discovered, moreover, that they were particularly rich in ancient and medieval folklore. And so he asked for leave from his teaching and religious duties to study for a sabbatical year at Miskatonic, hoping their manuscripts might shed some more light on the elusive Leviathan.
