History:Doctor Charles Moriarity was born to influence and wealth in the upper middle class of Boston, Massachusetts. A handsome and charming man, he was considered one of the most eligible bachelors of his circle. Educated at the best schools, he went onto become a leading pathologist in the city. Yet he had developed a knack for excitement and adventure which led him to the seedier parts of town and ultimately, to a number of failed romances. In the early 1920s, he developed syphilis, no doubt contracting it from one of his dalliances and went on to diagnose himself. The social stigma of contracting a venereal disease led him to hide his illness, and to focus his energies on treatments and cures. Desperation driving him to attempt some fairly ludicrous treatments and even searching out arcane knowledge on various diseases and the like. His romantic life faded and he pretended to be uninterested in affairs of the heart when in fact, he longed for the sweetness and comforts of a woman's touch, the gentle joys of an embrace on a cloudy day and the warmth of fondness. But felt monstrously ill and unwilling to inflict his tainted love upon someone worthy enough to hold his heart. Wracked with self-recriminations at the life he could have led, was expected to lead, and yet now ruined by misjudgment and adolescent dreams of adventure, Dr. Moriarity struggles mightily against his own mind, his own heart, his own body.
